New Codes for Social Determinates of Health for 2024

The 2024 ICD-10-CM has brought several new adjustments to the social determinates of health (SDoH) codes Z55-Z65 that are worth reporting. This time, we will focus on the significant changes that have been made and not the grammatical ones.

For Z62 Problems related to upbringing, there were a lot of revisions and additions involving SDoH categories for children. Z62. 1 Child in welfare custody deleted the sub classification of child in care of a non-parental family member and added child in welfare guardianship. This change will help to ensure that children in welfare custody receive the right care and attention they need.

Z62. 2 Institutional upbringing changed from child living in an orphanage or group home as one classification to separate classifications of child living in a group home, child living in an orphanage. This will help to better identify where children are living and the kind of care they are receiving.

Z62. 3 is new: Child in custody of non-parental relative. This was previously listed as part of Z62. 1, but now has its own set of codes and subcategories which include the following: Child in care of non-parental family member, Child in custody of grandparent, Child in kinship care, Guardianship by non-parental relative. This change will help to provide a more accurate and detailed description of a child’s custody.

Z62. 4 is Child in custody of non-relative guardian. This will help to identify when a child is under the care of someone who is not a relative.

Z62. 23 was added for Parent-step child conflict. This addition will help to identify when there is a conflict between a parent and their step-child.

Z62. 3 non-parental relative or guardian-child conflict. This change will help to identify when there is a conflict between a non-parental relative or guardian and a child.

Z62. 92 is not added to include if the child is a Runaway from their current living environment. This will help to identify when a child has run away from their current living environment.

And finally, Z65. for psychosocial circumstances includes the inclusion of being at risk of feeling loneliness. This will help to identify when someone is at risk of feeling lonely and can help to provide them with the necessary support.

Overall, the additions are really focused on clarifications of child environment and upbringing with some additional focus on lack of social support and the impact of loneliness. These changes are exciting and will help to provide more accurate and detailed information about a person’s social and environmental circumstances.
